Set in 16th-century Italy, Crossed Swords (sometimes referred to as The Master of Don Giovanni ) stars Errol Flynn as Renzo, a charming, witty, and adventurous nobleman. When he arrives in a small Italian duchy, he immediately runs afoul of the local Duke, a tyrannical ruler, while attempting to protect a maiden from unfair treatment.

Flynn traveled to Europe, co-producing and financing Il Maestro di Don Giovanni alongside Italian producers. Directed by Milton Krims, the film was shot entirely on location in Italy, utilizing historic castles and the legendary Cinecittà Studios in Rome. To maximize international appeal, the movie was shot in Pathecolor, a vivid color process that beautifully captured the lush Italian landscapes and the extravagant, ornate costume designs.
