The film begins with Bill Randa (Hiddleston), a geologist, and his colleague, Dr. Henry Simmons (John Goodman), who are on a mission to explore a mysterious island in the Pacific. They are joined by a team of soldiers, led by Lieutenant Colonel William Greer (Jackson), and a photographer, Molly (Larson). The team also includes a Vietnamese pilot, Phong (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson), and a local guide, Kwan (Simon Baker).
