After Edgar Cayce's death in 1945, the records were initially the property of his sons, Hugh Lynn Cayce and Edgar Evans Cayce, and Gladys Davis Turner. To ensure their permanent preservation, the Edgar Cayce Foundation (ECF) was chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia in February 1948. The Foundation's purpose was to provide legal and physical custody of the readings and all associated historical resources.
