You step into the shoes of Niko Bellic, a veteran of the Yugoslav Wars who arrives in the decadent, crime-ridden metropolis of Liberty City (Rockstar's satirical stand-in for New York City). Niko escapes his dark past in Eastern Europe to start a new life with his cousin Roman, who has lured him with exaggerated tales of wealth, luxury, and beautiful women. However, upon arrival, Niko quickly discovers a harsh reality: Roman lives in a dilapidated warehouse and is drowning in gambling debts. The game is a masterclass in cinematic storytelling, following Niko as he is pulled ever deeper into a world of shysters, thieves, and sociopaths, forced to confront that the American Dream is often a living nightmare for those on the bottom rung.
