The film's narrative is as delightfully absurd as the comedians who created it. The story begins in the Tuscan countryside in the 1980s. Mario (Massimo Troisi), a shy and melancholic school janitor, and his friend Saverio (Roberto Benigni), a neurotic and hyperactive elementary school teacher, are stuck at a railroad crossing. While waiting for an endless train to pass, Saverio unloads his worries about his sister, whose heart was broken by an American man.
