The BBFC's President, Sir Quentin Thomas, personally intervened in the decision. He noted that the film was so explicit it would normally attract an R18 rating—reserved for works intended to arouse and sold only in licensed sex shops. However, he ruled that Destricted was exempt because, in his judgment, it was "a work of art not intended to arouse" but rather a "serious consideration of sex and pornography as aspects of the human experience".

The film was screened at major festivals, including Sundance and Cannes, highlighting its position in the world of high-concept independent cinema.
