Leithold’s influence, however, extended far beyond his writing. Known as "a legend in AP calculus circles," he was a mentor to Jaime Escalante, the Los Angeles high-school teacher whose story was depicted in the 1988 film Stand and Deliver . Escalante himself remarked, "I called him my adviser. He was one of the great mathematicians. His book had beautiful problems. It made us believe that anybody could do calculus". Demonstrating a lifelong commitment to teaching, Leithold came out of retirement at age 72 to start a calculus program at Malibu High School. There, his students consistently achieved exceptional results, with average scores of 4.5 out of 5 on the Advanced Placement exam compared to the national average of 3.01. His later works include College Algebra and Trigonometry and a Spanish-language edition, Algebra y trigonometría con geometría analítica .
