The film is based on Hans-Eric Hellberg's young adult novel "Jag är Maria jag". Directed by Karsten Wedel and with a screenplay by Göran Setterberg, the film premiered in Sweden on December 15, 1979.

In the post-war era, Sweden cultivated an international reputation for its progressive penal system and social safety nets. However, cinema of the 70s, such as the works of Bo Widerberg and Stefan Jarl, frequently challenged the benevolence of these institutions.

Produced under the banners of Drakfilm AB, Treklövern, and the Svenska Filminstitutet (Swedish Film Institute) , the project boasted exceptional technical credentials. This included evocative, naturalistic cinematography by the legendary Rune Ericson , a pioneer in Swedish film production.
