Born on July 7, 1909, in Gorizia (then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in Italy), Jernej grew up in a unique, quadrilingual environment speaking Italian, Slovene, Croatian, and German. This early exposure to multiple languages was the perfect foundation for his future career. He studied at the universities of Padua, Florence, and finally Zagreb, where he became a student of Mirko Deanović, the founder of Croatian Italian studies.
