Released in 2003, E J-yong’s Untold Scandal ( Joseon namnyeo sangyeoljisa ) remains a landmark achievement in South Korean cinema. It boldly transposed Choderlos de Laclos’s 1782 French epistolary novel, Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), into the rigid, highly stratified world of the late Joseon Dynasty. The film brilliantly substituted the aristocratic decadence of pre-revolutionary France with the repressed, hyper-formalized upper classes of 18th-century Korea.
Although official Blu‑ray editions of Untold Scandal exist (notably the Korean First Press Limited Edition and the Japanese release), they can be difficult to find – especially for international buyers. Many editions are out of print. The CHD encode preserves the essence of those rare discs in a more convenient digital format, making the film available to a global audience.
