Kartosoewirjo led a decade-long insurgency against the Indonesian government starting in 1949, opposing the secular Pancasila ideology in favor of sharia law. His movement, the Tentara Islam Indonesia (TII), was eventually suppressed by the Indonesian military through "Operation Bharatayudha".
