Despite significant progress, the transgender community continues to face disproportionate challenges. In many parts of the world, legislative efforts continue to target gender-affirming care and bathroom access, illustrating that the "T" in LGBTQ+ is often the most vulnerable segment of the movement.
Following Stonewall, Rivera and Johnson founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) in 1970. STAR provided housing, food, and community to homeless queer youth and trans women in New York.
